The diode isolates the batteries from the solar cell so that when the sun is not out the solar cell will not drain the batteries.
The charging circuit for these batteries is simple a solar cell connected to a diode then connected to a nicad battery.

The panel that we re using for these circuits is this one part number pwr1241 from bg micro about 3 each.
Now replace the battery with the solar panel with the positive lead of the solar panel connected to the positive lead wire from screw 5 and the negative lead of the solar panel connected to the negative lead wire from screw 3.
Since the output of the panels varies from about 10 18volts i d like to regulate it at about 12 13vdc.
